The Three Lions legend will turn out next weekend for hapless Longford FC.

They are bottom of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Two after losing every game so far this season and letting in an average of 10 goals per match.

Pearce, 53, who won 78 caps for England, said yesterday: “I was intrigued by the chance to play for the team christened the worst in England.

“I come from the non-league system so I seem to have gone full circle.

“If it brings more players to Longford and gives the club a better profile that’s all well and good. It’s in the manager’s hands now if he picks me or not.”

Longford boss Nick Dawe, 54, said: “It’s brilliant, he’ll bring a great morale boost. I nearly fell off my chair when I found out.

“The players haven’t stopped texting me. I’m excited by his passion and he looks fit enough to play 90 minutes.”

Longford president Terry Godwin, 79, said: “It’s great for the club.

“My wife wanted Beckham but Pearce will have to do.”
