Some are starting to wonder about the ethnicity of a woman in Spokane Washington who works for the NAACP. The subject of concern is Rachel Dolezal, whom many are saying has been living a fraud. According to KHQ.com, the woman grew up as a white woman, but has pretended to be African American, all so she could get a job.
Dolezal is the chapter president of the local NAACP and the city has confirmed to KHQ that she stated her ethnicity as African American when applying for a job with the Ombudsman Commission. But the network says that the woman’s parents claim that Rachel grew up as a white woman, and that she has nothing about her that makes her black.
Right now, Dolezal teachers African American Culture at Eastern Washington University as an adjunct instructor. She is also an advisor with the Northern Idaho Black Student Association.
The woman was in the media when she claimed that threatening letters had been sent to the NAACP office. But a police investigation determined that the letters were never actually mailed and that someone had put the letters into the mailbox. There is no word as to who might have done this, and the police have filed no charges.
Spokane Mayor David Condon and City Council President Ben Stuckart issued this statement about Rachel’s role on the Ombudsman Commission:
“We are committed to independent citizen oversight and take very seriously the concerns raised regarding the chair of the independent citizen police ombudsman commission. We are gathering facts to determine if any city policies related to volunteer boards and commissions have been violated. That information will be reviewed by the City Council, which has oversight of city boards and commissions.”
The story is still developing, but it’s certainly odd.
